Pieces of Paradise

Since I last wrote, we have been playing tourist in the true sense of the word! Since we are not working a full schedule as of yet, we’ve had plenty of time to continue our exploration of Cape Cod and to eat our way through the freshest seafood imaginable! It’s interesting because everyone we ask about restaurant recommendations says the same thing – “You just can’t go wrong anywhere because the fish is always so fresh!” And, indeed, it is!

Of course we were spoiled in South Carolina with one of our workcamping perks being unlimited free golf, but we have played twice since our arrival. The first time was a cold and windy day at Sandwich Hollows Golf Club in – you guessed it – Sandwich, MA. Neither Bill nor I played our best game and I guess I was too cold to take any pictures! It was a nice course and I’m sure we’ll try it again on a nicer day!

Yesterday, however, was an absolutely gorgeous day and we played at Highland Links in Truro, which is north of us toward Provincetown. As you can see from the photos, the course is nestled up on the bluffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the Highland Lighthouse. Somehow, up there, you can quickly forget about your not-so-great game of golf as you get lost in your surroundings. Actually, it is a very challenging course and one in which you have to factor the constantly blowing breezes as you strive for that perfect shot! It truly was breathtaking…the views, not our golf games – but we had a delightful day on the links!

FullSizeRender (84)Following our golf game, we ventured to Wellfleet for lunch at Mac’s Shack, on the recommendation of the young man working in the Pro Shop. Once again, it did not disappoint. Not only do they have a full menu, but they also have sushi as well as a raw bar – what more could one want? Our server at Mac’s was a local gal who shared a recommendation for a detour on our way home. She has lived here all her life and suggested we take a ride to Lieutenant’s Island. What a cool place! You drive over a rickety, wooden, one-lane bridge on the bay side and then venture down dirt roads boasting some of the most magnificent homes tucked away in the woods but having a tremendous view of Cape Cod Bay. If you ever want to get lost…or truly become one with nature, Lieutenant’s Island is your spot! We espied this road sign on one of the more rugged roads…thought it was a nice way to say it! IMG_0704

I know it seems like all we do is eat, but as workampers we want to be able to recommend restaurants to our customers so….we continue to eat! Catching you up on some spots we’ve sampled since I last wrote, when you come to Cape Cod you must try the following…

  • Stewart’s – very close to the campground in Eastham with a great bar and a wonderful menu. We’ve been trying clam chowder almost everywhere we go in order to determine what we deem the best! In addition to the “chowda,” I had Cod Piccata and Bill enjoyed Fish and Chips. When the season really kicks in, they have jazz and blues music here almost every night.
  • Land Ho! – This restaurant is in Orleans, a tad south of Eastham. Again, we tried the chowder and I continued with shrimp while Bill continued his affair with Fish and Chips!IMG_0671
  •  Hot Chocolate Sparrow – Wow! this is an unbelievable spot, also in Orleans. Just imagine a candy counter like you’ve never seen, coffee and hot chocolate of many varieties, pastries, cakes, pies, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, soups, and ice cream – all under the same roof! We stopped in on one of those ugly days last week in the afternoon and the place was packed. We warmed up with a cup of their famous hot chocolate and yes, we did split an éclair! Well, it was Mother’s Day!IMG_0667
  • The Lighthouse – After a day of exploring, we stopped in for a late, light lunch. We sat at the bar and enjoyed soup – Bill stuck with the chowder while I branched out to try their Roasted Eggplant Soup – Yum! We also shared a clam strip appetizer. Interesting place – seemed to be a local stop, which we have often found to be the best. IMG_0637

In order for us to be able to continue our Cape Cod culinary adventures, in addition to golf, we have also been biking almost every day on the Cape Cod Rail Trail (CCRT) that I wrote about previously. We continue to increase our mileage and yesterday took a detour off the trail to bike to what is called the Coast Guard Beach. It would take us only about three and a half miles to bike to this beach which would eliminate the $20 parking fee and the difficulty of finding a parking spot! Along the way, we stopped into the National Seashore Visitors Center, which was very informative and interesting. We picked up a hiking map for future physical activity! The bike trail is also great for running which I tried out this morning. This could become a habit but an early morning ritual as I am sure it gets really crowded the later in the morning you venture out.

Well, this almost catches you up on our activities to date. I do want to share our day in Chatham but will do that in a separate post. Stay Calm and Travel On…
